This gene encodes a plasma glycoprotein that positivelyregulates the alternative complement pathway of the innate immunesystem. This protein binds to many microbial surfaces and apoptoticcells and stabilizes the C3- and C5-convertase enzyme complexes ina feedback loop that ultimately leads to formation of the membraneattack complex and lysis of the target cell. Mutations in this generesult in two forms of properdin deficiency, which results in highsusceptibility to meningococcal infections. Multiple alternativelyspliced variants, encoding the same protein, have beenidentified.[provided by RefSeq, Feb 2009]
